VITORIA
The green city
Vitoria has accepted and celebrated the Sustainable Development Goals and it is committed to fulfilling all of them by 2030.
It has been named European Green Capital because of the variety of natural parks that surround the city, their efforts against climate change and because of its compromise with the environment and green spaces.
They have a lot of plans for the near future to keep evolving to a better, even more sustainable city. Here some of the projects:
1-Public transport: To improve their connections both inside and outside of the city, they have a variety of lines of public transport. They have promised that by 2025 their bus fleet will be 100% electric.
2-Industry: They believe in the 4.0 Industry, as they have a powerful industrial past and present they want to make it into future also collaborating with economic and company agents to improve the conditions and attend necessities. For that they need to train people to work there, that is why they center on making quality and accessible education within the city such as vocational training and Universities.
3-Mobility: They also want to be logistical referrers of sustainable mobility, that is why by 2025 they will create Future Logistic & Mobility Lab to create the mobility of the future. They are close to it because of their high-velocity train and plane in Jundiz multimodal platform: an ambitious infrastructure like that is key to lead the freight transport of the European Atlantic Axis.
4-Sustainability: After being awarded many times for it, they are going to continue with rehabilitation to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods and the MasterPlan Centre will allow a new social and economic boost to be given to an emblematic area of the city. As for the Green Belt, the Larragorri park, in the Lasarte gravel area, will provide a natural and sustainable solution to the environmental problems of the area, because, in addition to expanding the Green Belt, it will prevent flooding due to flooding of the southern rivers and will allow to solve the contamination of soils that exists there.
5-Quality of life: They want to make it an open and supportive, cohesive and inclusive city, with a high level of quality of life and human development. The challenges in this area are the aging of the population (with the commitment to no older person being isolated or neglected or the creation of safe urban routes for the elderly), the diversity of modern societies, and the needs of childhood and adolescence. For that, a Social Innovation Center will be set up to offer effective solutions.
